Kedoshim #1- Kibud Av V'Eim

“You shall fear your mother and father”
״אמו ואביו תיראו״-19:2
Why does it say to fear your mother before your father? According to rashi, it is because a child fears a father more than his mother, so therefore it says mother first to show that fearing your mother is also very important.
What are other reasons why it says mother first?
Where else in the Torah do we see 2 mitzvot that have a certain order for a reason?
What are examples in the Torah of people following/not following this mitzvah?
Where else is order in the Torah important?

  1. According to the Chizkuni the mother is mentioned before the father because a baby becomes more familiar with his mother first. By the Aseret Hadibrot, however, the father is mentioned first because he is the first one that trains his kids to observe the mitzvot like for example Shabbos. I like this answer because its simple and makes sence why the mother is mentioned first here because she’s the one that carries the baby for nine months so it’s more familliar to her first

  2. The Tur HaAroch comments on this question of why the mother is mentioned first here and the father mentioned first by the Ten Commandments by saying that by the Ten Commandments the Torah demands us to honor our father’s preceding our mothers while over her it is the opposite. We should honor our mothers before our father’s. I like this answer because it is clearly and concise answer, but I wish that it would give more explanation as to why we honor one parent before another in these specific places

The sforno explains that the Torah begins to explain the commandment of honoring your father and mother is great detail, by writing that everyone should should treat their father and mother with deep respect. In addition to children providing for aged or economically unstable parents with food, drink, and clothing, a child must not look down on their parents who in the meantime have become economically dependent on their children.

  4. Where are other places in the Tanach where order is important?
In ישעיהו, פסוק א it says he ruled during the days עוזיה was king, but then in פרק ו it says that he ישעיהו started Nevua the day עוזיה died. We learn from this that death really means he got צרעת, and that the Sefer must have really began with Perek 6 instead of 1. I like this answer because it shows how the sefer is really beyond us, and we can never really understand it in its entirety.
