“חקת עולם לדרתיכם בכל מושבתיכם כל חלב וכל דם לא תאכלו״ 3:17
“A perpetual statue throughout your genarations in all your dwellings; you may not consume any fat or blood.
Why does the Torah prohibit eating fat?
Ramban says that in an anima there are 2 types of fat: “Shuman”- kosher fat which is in the ribs of the animal and inseparable, and Cheilev- which is the non- kosher fat on top of the meet and can be separated. It neede to be removed because its not good for our health.
What are other reasons why fat of an animal is prohibited? What is the punishment if you consume it? What are other parts of karbanot that you are not allowed to eat and what are the reasons for it? Why does the Passuk need to say throughout your generations AND all your dwellings?
The Chizkuni answers this question by saying that whenever the torah mention something in relation to animal offerings it repeats the fact that bnei yisrael can't eat fat or blood. He then goes on to say that we learn from this that we shouldn't assume that something is good enough to be given to hashem, it also has to be something accepted by the people. The Chizkuni concludes by stating that while the torah does prohibit eating these parts of an animal, it doesn't prohibit selling it or making some other use of it. I liked this answer because it showed us that we should always push ourselves to try to improve the connection we have with hashem and work harder to not give hashem something that wouldn't be accepted by bnei yisrael.
ReplyDeleteChizkuni says that it says לדורותם to tell us that this law should be enforced and followed, even in the future when there isn’t a temple. בכל מושבותיכם teaches that it does not only apply in the Land of Eretz Yisrael , rather everywhere one would live no matter where. I like this answer because it covers both terms and gives a straight forward , good explanation with no conflict to it. It’s basic but makes sense. Also, it applies to us because we are the future generation with no Temple and need to still oblige to the rules.

ReplyDeleteThe Or Hachaim says that the law of not being able to eat the fat or blood of the animal applies to any time and any place you eat meat. One might have thought that you would only not be aloud to eat the fat and blood of the animal, when it is going to be given as a Korban, or if it is near the beit hamikdash, but that is not true. This law applies when someone is eating meat at any time, and not just at the beit hamikdash.
ReplyDeleteI like this because the people aren’t always going to be at the beit hamikdash giving Korbanot, and it is good for Bnei Yisrael to take the laws that they learned at the beit Hamikdash, and take it into their every day lives.
In the ויקרא ז:כ״ה-כ״ז, the punishment for eating חלב or דם is stated. The punishment for eating either is כרת. Nowadays, however, we tend to assume that the punishment will be given in עולם הבא. I do not think that the punishment for eating חלב or דם should be so harsh. I believe that the Torah intends this punishment for those who eat חלב or דם on purpose, however it still seems like too much to me.
