In Parshat Ki Tisa, Perek לא it says:
Speak to the Israelite people and say: Nevertheless, you must keep My sabbaths, for this is a sign between Me and you throughout the ages, that you may know that I the LORD have consecrated you. You shall keep the sabbath, for it is holy for you. He who profanes it shall be put to death: whoever does work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his kin.
1)Why does hashem repeat that we have to keep shabbos? The Or HaChaim answers: the reason it’s repeated is because we might have thought that since right before this verse the torah permitted the violation of shabbat laws to sick people, that the holiness of shabbat is insignificant, and can be broken to prepare medications etc and can be broken even when a life is not in danger. So, the torah therefore highlights the holiness of shabbat and repeats the obligation to tell us that it can only be broken when a life is in danger.
2) What other reasons are there for why the obligation of shabbos is repeated? 3) What other circumstances is it okay to break shabbos? 4) What is the punishment for breaking shabbos?
According to a Gemara in Shabbat (קכח) a midwife can break Shabbat to help a woman in labor. She can also violate Shabbat to return home. I agree with this idea because giving birth is a big deal and in order for the women to give birth, she needs help from the midwife.
ReplyDeleteIn shemot itsays that if a thief sneaks into your house at night, you are allowed to kill them at the nighttime but not in the day. Gemara Sanhedrin comments on this and says that the Torah commands, ‘If one comes to kill you, kill him first.” That would mean you the allowed to violate the halacha of no killing because a gun is muktzeh. In addition, Rambam in Mishneh torah states that you are allowed to kill the thief whenever needed water it be at day or nighttime or shabbos or not.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this answer because it is a case of pikuach nefesh and you should be allowed to violate shabbos if it means potentially saving your life and the life of others( who may be in your home).

Q: Is there a time when we are aloud to break Shabbat?
ReplyDeleteIn Yomah, it says that we are aloud to break Shabbat in a Pikuach nefesh situation. If someone is going to die, you are aloud to break Shabbat in order to save their life. Different rabbis give different reasons for why we know that we can break Shabbat in a pikuach nefesh situation. R’ Yishmael says that if I can kill someone to potentially save life, and killing is more severe than breaking Shabbat, then Kal Vechomer, I can break Shabbat to potentially save a life. R’ Akiva says that if a kohen can leave the Avodah to give testimony that will potentially save a life, then Kal Vechomer, one can violate Shabbat to potentially save a life.
I like these sources on proving why we can violate Shabbat because I feel like they make a lot of sense, and they aren’t just saying what we are and aren’t aloud to do, but they are bringing in other relatable situations to help us understand.
It is repeated here because it needs to teach us that building the BH does not override shabbas. Bni Israel should keep shabbas even when creating a resting place for hashem. Rabbi Bachya states that shabbas is the 'pricible of faith' and is equal to all the ten commandants because on shabbas we express our belief that hash created the world. I really like this answer because sometimes its easy to forget the importance of shabbas. In todays world, so many people feel disconnected from shabbas that they don't feel the need to keep it. It has become something that people choose not to do. The importance of shabbas should never be undermined. I think this passim reflects that shabbas is so important that it is even repeated. ReplyDeleteWhy does hashem repeat that we have to keep shabbos?
ReplyDeleteChizkuni says that the reason it was repeated it to warn us that anyone who openly violates or purposely violates shobbos will be killed. And if he does it in private he will be cut from membership of the Jewish people and externally by hashem. Bc the the punishment has already been given out, the warning not to be guilty of the sin and punishment has to be written out also so therefore it has to be written twice. We actually just learned this concept in Gemara so it’s cool to see in other places where is applies also
In shemot 31:14, it says the punishment for breaking shabbos is death and one will be cut off from the midst of their people. This had me wondering why the punishment is so harsh. I think it is too teach us that shabbos is not a joke or something to be taken lightly even though it is a gift from Hashem.
